Buttons
The buttons or action area of the Combat screen is positioned right in the middle of the screen, this is so that it is easy to get to.

It also has pictures of both the person attacking and the person being targeted, sometimes the target will be a friendly if you are healing for example but most of the time it will be an enemy.

Additional Buttons
Additional buttons may be shown from time to time, these include buttons to allow you to attempt to free yourself from nulification or paralysis.

When pressing a button whatever action that button triggers will be applied to your target, sometimes when using a button the target may automatically switch from a friendly to an enemy or vice versa this is normal as some actions just can not be used on an enemy, while some can not be used on a friendly.
